Silver diamine fluoride can arrest caries without a drill. Its permanent black mark limits use on front teeth and reduces acceptance by patients, parents and caregivers. Fluoride varnish is more acceptable visually, but weaker as a stand-alone arrest treatment for many cavitated lesions. Resin infiltration is aesthetic only on selected non-cavitated lesions. A filling works when the patient can sit for it, and often does not in outreach or residential care. The gap is efficacy, acceptance, and a simple chairside workflow.

SCF is a novel silver-based compound in which silver ions are stabilized by a water-soluble phosphine ligand (PTA) to form Ag(PTA)₂F. This stronger coordination improves light stability and reduces dark silver species linked to staining, while aiming to retain antimicrobial and remineralizing activity.
The product is under development and the underlying invention is protected by an international patent family owned by The University of Hong Kong (WO 2023/016544 A1).
